If i found a poem online about a topic, and changed some of the words, would that be copyright infingment?

i found a poem on a topic that i needed for a project, and i was wondering if i changed the words around, would it be copyright infringement? because i don't want to get in trouble, and i liked the poem, but i have to make my own, so would that be bad ?

Yes. Because plagarism is also stealing ideas and you do not want to mess with that. Try thinking of another idea, and believe me, you'll be more proud knowing that YOU wrote it yourself originally. Your teacher might even recognize the poem and give you a failing grade.
