What's a good topic for National History Day 2010?

The topic this year is %26quot;Innovation in History: Impact and Change.%26quot; Some sample topics were:

Gunpowder

The Camera

The Cotton Gin

The Sewing Machine

I'd be interested in doing a project that involves photography or music, either or. If you don't have a good topic for either of those, just give me whatever else you have.

Thanks.

Don't forget that innovation isn't necessarily an invention. It can be anything new, like a method, and idea, etc... It can even be a new law!

Technological innovation will seem like the most obvious ones to choose since they're so easy. Although in my opinion, it's best to choose something that no one else would have. ;)

Cotton gin and camera have been done tons of times before, but I like the gunpowder one. There's tons of impact and change about that topic.

Music has evolved sooo much in the hundreds of years of its past. I'm sure you can find an innovation of a music style or something (like pop or rock 'n roll).

Best of Luck!!

AUSTRALIA LOST THE ASHES..CAN WE CHANGE THE TOPIC NOW?

ok congrats england!! hard luck australia..its over now. instead of australia losing the ashes, i think we should talk more about england winning it.i dont thing so any1 in this section ( other dan the english ) is happy dat england won.every1 is happy dat australia lost it. and y r we criticizing ponting??luk at all the great things hes done for australia.1 mistake doesnot mean dat he is a bad captain.i feel bad for australian users, specially users like %26quot;RicKYlOVeR%26quot;.poor guy must be feeling terrible after reading how much every1 hates australia.i think dey have stopped making fun of us indians.even we should stop. can we??
AUSTRALIA LOST THE ASHES..CAN WE CHANGE THE TOPIC NOW?
good question, BUT win or lost for australia wont change the topic here, believe me I've been here almost two years and have given up, were just too popular I suppose
AUSTRALIA LOST THE ASHES..CAN WE CHANGE THE TOPIC NOW?
Good luck, Yasir007, they'll gloat as long as they can. After 25+ years of Australia being so dominant, now they may have to address their own shortcomings as the Aussies rebuild.
Change topic? O. K !!! who will win next Ashes?

i like if ponting remain a captain any way !!!!! he should be a captain !!!

other then a few Australian users what rest of do to Team India? or

for users of India?

(%26quot;PAN CACK IS FLAT BOTH SIDE%26quot; DOESN'T IT?)
I'm happy England won, but I rarely bother to post here as the constant childish India vs the rest of the world conflict bores the crap out of me.
k. STOPPED NOW
Ponting is criticised and condemned for the foolish mistakes, which even a novice would not commit.

He inherited a strong, united well gelled team from Steve Waugh. He has now split it into too many groups, cracked it and de-gelled it.

He has let his personal whims rule the roost instead of team and country's interest. Lee was fully fit but he doesn't like him (it is a well known secret). So he dropped him saying that he is not fully fit. He took the team into the 5th oval test without a spinner and am really surprised that an experience guy like him came oue out to say that he has 'misread' the pitch.

When the debutant Trott walked in he should have attacked him with a suitable field but he chose to defend, so much so the youngster could score a valuable, morale boosting 41 runs.

He had negative frame of mind when he approached the crucial test of the series. Instead of winning it, he aimed only at drawing it. The saying is aim at the stars you will at least reach the tree top. He not even aimed at the tree top. So much so he went below the roots.

His arrogance is a shame on Australia and several of my Australian friends hav admitted it to me on several occasions.

The vandalism he has committed, had it be done by any player from any other country, ICC would have slapped a very heavy fine and that apart, he would have also been dropped by that country, simply because he has not conducted himself as a goodwill ambassador. Does he conducted him as a role model and an ambassador of goodwill for Australia? He proved that he is abase punk.
What, %26amp; be accused of trying to change the subject because we lost? lol, let the Poms have their fun, they deserve it.

BTW, what would you have us change the subject to? Let me guess, your team! lol
i would love 2
sorry...........but australia's performance was that bad.(which is a perfect reason to move on)

Who would be an expert on ghosts?

I am doing an I-Search paper for my English class and my original topic was paranormal. He told me to narrow it down. I have to do interviews and I want to be able to at least get 3. I already have one but I need 2 more and I need one of them to be an expert but I don't know who would be an expert. He recomended a minister or psychologist. I am not sure, should I change my topic to aliens or demons or something else from the paranormal. Please help!
Who would be an expert on ghosts?
priests, rabbis, imams, and other religious scholars who study the holy books, apocrypha, and historical accounts can become

expert's on ghosts ! well you can consult a psychologist but he might say %26quot; there's nothing like that %26quot;. By the way i am a ghost expert ! you can take some notes from me as well ! only if you desire !

if you want to become one [ i mean ghost expert not to a real ghost ! :) ] check this link :
Who would be an expert on ghosts?
first of all there is noting like %26quot;ghosts%26quot;.maybe a mad person
The Atlantic Paranormal Society ( TAPS) look for their website.
do u watch ghost hunters?
ghostbusters^^

seriously though

u might want to consider aliens, cuz its easier

if u want to stick with ghosts, a psychologist or maybe an %26quot;eyewitness%26quot; would be good (but it would be nice if he or she had some credentials)... maintain privacy if possible
http://www.alabamaparanormal.org/ or look for the local paranormal investigators in your area...

A minister would be a good choice, too.

Argumentative essay on death penalty?

have to do 3 pt thesis(sigh) essay on a topic with 1800 words.

I chose to be against the death penalty. The 3 points i have are inefficient court proceedings, wrongful convictions, and immorality.

for court proceedings:

I can elaborate on how the appeal system clogs the courts and wastes everyone's time

Refute the common argument that paying for someone to live a life in prison is expensive with the costs of these proceedings

statistics

no idea where to go from there.

for wrongful convictions:

I can explain in further detail why a wrongful conviction when someone's life is at stake is wrong

I can then get into prejudice, etc.

statistics

No idea where to go from there as well though :(

I really worry that I wont be able to hit the word limit and it's due midnight tonight. If I can't hit it there's no changing topics. I'm not too worried about elaborating on morality, but if anyone can spread more ideas on those other two points I would be grateful
Argumentative essay on death penalty?
1800 words isn't a very high limit to reach, there's 300 in this answer! ;)

Things I think about in writing to %26quot;argue%26quot;...

Remember not to rant.

Make sure the argument is well planned, organised and follows a naturally convincing order.

Establish some common ground between you and the reader...appeal to the reader's character and sense of reason. (' Like you, I too feel a sense of horror and repulsion at what is happening here but...' )

Don't be afraid to sneak in a made up personal anecdote to gain pathos...facts and figures don't have to be accurate...just believable. Presuming this is for an English class, you're going for writing effect not factual accuracy.

Remember for each point you are arguing for, state the opposite view to the stand that you are taking first, then undermine it with your argument.

Work in some technical effects...

1. Rhetorical question

Can we really expect the school to keep paying from its limited resources?

2. Emotive language

Imagine being cast out into the street, cold, lonely and frightened.

3. Parallel structures

To show kindness is praiseworthy; to show hatred is evil.

4. Sound patterns

Alliteration: Callous, calculating cruelty 鈥?is this what we must expect?

Assonance: A fine time we all had, too.

5. Contrast

Sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind.

6. Description and Imagery (i.e. using metaphor, simile and personification)

While we wait and do nothing, we must not forget that the fuse is already burning.

7. The 鈥榬ule of three鈥?br>

I ask you, is this fair, is it right, is it just?

8. Repetition

Evil minds will use evil means.

9. Hyperbole (using exaggeration for effect)

While we await your decision, the whole school holds its breath.

10. Anecdote (as mentioned earlier)

There's some real mark grabbers there if you can work some of those into your essay.

Does this guy like me?

This guy stares at me a lot even though we met 5 weeks ago and barely know each other. He became my best friend close friends since they have classes together and they have each others number so they text a lot. My friend knows I like him and she ask if He would Like to meet me and it took him a while to answer after changing topic then he went back to that topic saying he wants to meet me...

lol the next day he comes looks at me really quickly from the corner of his eyes back and forth and then said hi to my friend and left. Lol what a weirdo I think he's shy. so yea I finally ask my friend for his number and I called him yesterday he didn't get mad or shock or freaked out he didn't really cared that I called him...so we talked for a few minutes and hung up then I don't know how he found out but he text my friend after we hung up saying %26quot;I think she likes me%26quot;

so today he ask my friend why I called him and she answered saying becuz I can and i wanted to but he didn't tell her to tell me to stop calling him he just said oh.....

but even for that now he knows I like him but he still stares at me and doesn't ask me out? or is he trying to get the real fact that I ACTUALLY DO LIKE HIM?
Does this guy like me?
Girl just be patient. It sounds like he really does like you. I think you're worrying over nothing. He may just be building up his nerve to ask you.
Does this guy like me?
He probably likes you! :) Go for it!

Any ideas? We're really stuck on what to do. She doesn't want to change the topic because she already wrote her essay. Any idea that you may have is completely welcome. THANKS!

Compare heart rate when drinking different levels of caffeine. Measure heart rate before and after drinking cola, coffee, tea, etc. and compare. You can buy an inexpensive heart rate monitor at a drug store or ask your family doctor to help you with the experiment. If you know anyone that smokes you could perform the same experiment. You could also monitor breathing rate. Count the number of breaths per minute or per ten minutes before and after smoking a cigarette. I think this might work? You could also interview doctors/hospital workers about what patients they have seen who have used drugs and what effects they've had on the body? Hope this helps! :)

Shy, arrogant or just isn't onto me? Not my fault since I'm a gal? Willseem desparate if I talk to him first?

There's a guy in school - quiet, I dunno if he is shy or arrogant. I have a bad crush on him. I know he notices me too cos I caught him looking at me many times n maybe I am just noticing him too much but like he'll b holding the door but once I pass through it he would quit holding and leave and the few times when I dropped something he was the one who helped me too. We've never really talked but the few times I talked to him he always smiles at me (I noticed he never smiles, even at good jokes in class)

One crazy day I went up to him and did something dumb -I asked if he's free to come for the movie my club was screening in sch and didn't give him anytime to react. Next day he went up to me, staring intensely into my eyes and smiling and said sorry he won't be free. I was v embarrased and kept changing topic but he kept coming back to the movie. Then class began, he still talked but I ended the conversat Since then he's never held out doors\said hi. My courage died. I still like him
Shy, arrogant or just isn't onto me? Not my fault since I'm a gal? Willseem desparate if I talk to him first?
He sounds like he likes you and is just shy. two shy people arent good it means neither of you will make the move. You have nothing to lose so just ask him out. It cant get worse, all he can do is say no. if he says he is busy just say ok if you ever want to go out give me a call. that leaves the door open for him.
Shy, arrogant or just isn't onto me? Not my fault since I'm a gal? Willseem desparate if I talk to him first?
Go up to him and tell him you like him. Write a letter if you're shy.. He probably doesn't know that you like him..

    Good luck !
You're an idiot. He likes you obviously, but he's just as much as an idiot as you are. You're both too shy to say or interact with each other now.
what grade are you in? you need to get some confidence.
I think you should just talk to him - keep it short. I would try to approach him several times. Again - keep it short. If he starts to respond - don't run, hear him out. Be cool and confident. If he snubs you - whatever, you have nothing to lose cause at the end of the day, you don't know him that well. At the end of the day, after a little conversation - you might not even like him anyway:)
