Polly I am writing this because so far you have been offered a link that this person sends to absolutely everyone on this site and someone who wants to chat you up.
So let's get serious.
Yes your counselor should be able to teach you social skills but they might be overworked/not have the time to put into helping you.
There should be groups in your area to help with social anxiety or shyness; or teach social skills. Look on the web, ask your neighborhood community health center or youth center.
You can learn a lot from the web itself although then you will have to learn to put your new skills into practice. That is the most important thing. Even though it might be a bit uncomfortable, experiment as often as possible with your new skills - e.g. starting and maintaining a conversation, being assertive, and so on.
